It's understandable and, honestly, a self-evident part of our always-online world, that authors promote their published articles. They want to get the word out that their work is out there, at the very least for professional reasons (we've all heard the academia's mantra "publish or perish"). But, as is sometimes the case, an article could change someone's life. Whether it be a breakthrough in an area someone else is working in that helps their own research progress or a medical finding that can help a patient. So, don't be shy, authors! Promote your work!

Tips for self-promotion

  • Identify your audience. Who would care or want to know about your article and findings? Where are you most likely to connect with those people? Who can help you?
  • Use your institution's PR/Marketing department. Your success is their success! Get your institution's help in promoting and disseminating your work. At the very least, you can tag their social accounts to get a wider reach online.
  • Utilize the journal, publisher, and society (if applicable). There are multiple resources these entities have to help you in promoting your article. Don't be shy to ask for help!
  • Use your own network. You might be surprised if you think about the number of people you know (colleagues, mentors, mentees, associates) that can help in spreading the word about your work. Reach out and see if they'll help! Maybe offer to do the same when they have a paper published.
