Promoting Your Article: Author Services

If you’ve recently had your research published, congratulations! It doesn’t matter if it’s your first article or your hundredth, getting published is a significant accomplishment. In today’s research environment, however, there’s one last step for you to take as an author: promoting your work.

It’s no secret that having your work be discoverable by other researchers is tremendously important. Publishing in a journal that is indexed or available on a widely used research platform such as Ovid® greatly enhances the discoverability of your paper. Discoverability is one step. Promotion is the next step.

Types of journal promotions

Promotion of your paper involves summarizing the key points of your research for consumption by a wide audience, including the general public. Fortunately, there are companies available to prepare promotional materials on your research, and they offer a wide range of services.

For example, the suite of promotional services offered by Editage, in partnership with Wolters Kluwer, provide you with a number of options:

  • Plain-language summary: A key aspect of getting wider coverage of your research, particularly media coverage, is being able to convey key aspects of your study in plain language.
  • Research news story: One way to help your research get media coverage is to do the “heavy lifting” of drafting a news story for them. This also helps ensure that the key points of your study are accurately explained.
  • Infographics: Engagement via social media increasingly requires a visual aspect. Images have consistently shown to increase engagement with a social media post. A visual summary of your research communicates your key findings in an appealing format.
  • Video summary: A video summary of your study takes the visual aspect of social media to another level. Brevity is key, however, so if you go this route, the video’s length should be limited to two to three minutes.
  • Research promotion pack: Offering all of the items listed above, this package delivers content that can be shared on social media, at conferences, or as part of grant applications.

Where to start

There are promotional services available to meet a variety of needs and uses. Whether you use Editage or another service, here’s what to do:

  1. Determine the level of promotion you need. Not all papers are created equal, so not all need a “full court press” of promotion. So objectively determine your needs.
  2. Set your budget. Prices vary depending on what promotional service you are interested in, so determine how much you’re willing to spend.
  3. Choose your vendor. Make sure you understand not only the prices they charge for their services, but also the turnaround times involved.
