Insomnia, a prevalent sleep disorder, affects energy levels, mood, and overall quality of life. It is associated with increased risks of metabolic, cardiovascular, and mental health conditions, as well as higher mortality rates. Traditional treatments, like medication, often have limited long-term efficacy and side effects, prompting interest in alternative therapies such as acupuncture.

Acupuncture, especially targeting the Anmian points, has been traditionally used to alleviate sleep disturbances by regulating the nervous system and promoting relaxation. This case series reports on five patients treated for severe insomnia at the Outpatient Department of the International Institute of Yoga and Naturopathy Medical Sciences, Chengalpattu. The patients, aged 18 to 68, received 30-minute acupuncture sessions focused on the Anmian points, five days a week for two weeks.

Results showed significant improvements in sleep duration and quality, with patients averaging nearly seven hours of sleep per night and experiencing fewer nighttime awakenings. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores indicated substantial reductions, demonstrating the potential of acupuncture as an effective, non-pharmacological treatment for severe insomnia and improved overall well-being.

The effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on sleep disorders varies from person to person, and may be better for mild sleep disorders or sleep disorders caused by psychological factors. For severe sleep disorders, a combination of medication and other treatment methods may be necessary. It is suggested that acupuncture and moxibustion treatment be carried out under the guidance of traditional Chinese medicine doctors. Meanwhile, maintaining good lifestyle habits such as regular sleep schedules, healthy diet, and moderate exercise can also help improve sleep quality.
